How do glow sticks work?

These glow necklaces, like all glowstick products, are chemiluminescent. That means that they get their light from a chemical reaction. The two chemicals involved are encased in ampules inside the glowstick. When you snap and bend a glowstick, the ampules break and the chemicals mix. This gets the molecules excited enough to create some light -- six to eight hours' worth of light, in fact. It doesn't create heat, though, so glowsticks stay cool against your skin.
