The History of LEDs
In 1962, General Electric figured out how to make light-emitting diodes (LEDs) from crystals. They created a red light, and did so with much greater efficiency than other sources of electric light. Soon, LEDs were being used for alarm clocks, watches, and other small electronic items.
Engineers figured out how to balance the chemicals in LEDs to produce other colors of lights, and they began to work toward making LEDs practical for light bulbs. The most recent trade show for the lighting industry showed a new LED light bulb. These bulbs won't be on your grocer's shelves any time soon, but our LED flashlight produces bright light with little energy use, making it a completely practical flashlight for camping, hiking, or any general use.
Are LEDs practical for daily use?
An ordinary light bulb uses about six times as much energy as an LED that produces the same amount of light. Common flashlights use incandescent bulbs, so they use up your batteries faster -- a major issue if you're relying on them in emergency situations. Step up to an LED flashlight.
